Surgical margins for the extirpation of oral cancer
نویسنده
چکیده
For three-dimensional tissues, surgical margins can be divided into mucosal margins and deep margins. Mucosal margins are clearer than deep margins because we cannot directly see the deeper boundary of the tumor mass. Deep margins consist of mesenchymal tissue (e.g., muscle and connective tissue) and neurovascular channels and are difficult to delineate, whereas surgical margins can be precisely cut on the mucosa. 3. Margins according to proximity Margins are currently classified as positive, close, or clear, according to their proximity to the tumor mass in the pathological specimen. However, there is no clear distinction among the three. Depending on the definition, positive margins may include the carcinoma in situ but not dysplasia

Positive surgical margins in early stage oral cavity cancer: an analysis of 20,602 cases.
OBJECTIVE To report the incidence of positive surgical margins in early oral cavity cancer and identify patient, tumor, and system factors associated with their occurrence. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING Retrospective analysis of the National Cancer Database. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with stage I or II oral cavity squamous cell cancer between 1998 and 2011 were identified. Univaria...
متن کاملDecreasing loco-regional recurrence for oral cavity cancer with total Mohs margins technique
BACKGROUND The conventional technique for cancer resection margin analysis studies only 0.1% of the surgical margins. Complete frozen section margins - also known as Mohs margins - allows for analysis of 100% of the surgical margins. METHODS The objective of our study is to compare oral cavity cancer loco-regional recurrence rates when treated by total frozen sections technique (Total Mohs ma...
متن کاملExpression of E-cadherin and matrix metalloproteinase-9 in oral squamous cell carcinoma and histologically negative surgical margins and association with clinicopathological parameters.
Minimal residual cancer cells may not be detected in surgical margins of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with routine histological examination. Using molecular markers at surgical margins can be helpful. We attempted to evaluate the MMP-9 and E-cadherin expression in OSCC samples and tumor-free surgical margins and association with clinicopathological factors. We examined E-cadherin and MMP...
متن کاملSurgical treatment for recurrent solitary fibrous tumor invading atlas.
BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), a rare neoplasm, usually originates in the pleura. Extrapleural SFTs occasionally occur in the head and neck. METHODS In this study, the extirpation of a rare case of recurrent SFT invading the atlas is discussed. RESULTS Ten years after surgical resection of an SFT in the right parapharyngeal space, the patient returned with a complaint of swelling ...
متن کاملLong-Term Surgical Complications in the Oral Cancer Patient: a Comprehensive Review. Part I
OBJECTIVES Oral and oropharyngeal cancer remains among the top ten most common malignancies in the United States and worldwide. Over the last several decades the approach to treatment of oral cancer has changed very little with regards to primary tumour extirpation while the approach to the "at risk" lymph nodes has evolved significantly. Perhaps the most significant change in the surgical trea...
